Yorgos Lanthimos is back — and, once again, he’s getting weird.
In a move that perfectly fits his offbeat sensibility, the director of Poor Things and The Favourite has launched a bizarre promotional campaign for his upcoming sci-fi satire Bugonia:
Fans who shave their heads at select cinemas in New York, London, and Los Angeles this week can claim a free early screening ticket to the film.
The promotion, announced by Searchlight Pictures, instantly went viral — blending marketing stunt, performance art, and pure Lanthimos absurdity.

A Marketing Stunt Straight Out of a Lanthimos Movie
The event, dubbed “The Bugonia Experience”, kicked off in London’s Prince Charles Cinema before expanding to other major cities.
Fans lined up outside theaters where barbers — dressed in all-white lab coats — were ready to buzz willing participants. Each volunteer received a free ticket to Bugonia and a limited-edition T-shirt reading: “Rebirth is Freedom.”
“It’s about transformation, letting go of vanity,” explained Lanthimos in a brief statement. “Hair grows back. Curiosity doesn’t.”

About Bugonia
Bugonia stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe — marking the fourth collaboration between Stone and Lanthimos.
The story follows two alien visitors who come to Earth and begin to question humanity’s obsession with image, power, and conformity.
It’s described as a darkly comic blend of sci-fi allegory and social commentary, based loosely on the 2003 South Korean cult film Save the Green Planet!
Early festival buzz from Venice and Telluride 2025 suggests it’s Lanthimos’ most daring work yet — part psychological experiment, part cosmic fable.

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons Reunite
tone’s performance has been described as “unrecognizable”, both in appearance and tone.
Critics note that she continues her run of fearless roles under Lanthimos, playing an alien struggling to imitate human emotions.
Jesse Plemons, meanwhile, delivers what IndieWire called “a quiet masterclass in discomfort.”
“We just trust each other completely,” said Stone about working with Lanthimos again. “He creates a world that’s both terrifying and liberating.”

The Viral Moment
Within hours, the hashtag #BugoniaChallenge began trending on TikTok.
Videos of fans shaving their heads — some at home, others at the event — racked up millions of views.
One user joked: “I didn’t understand The Lobster, but I’ll lose my hair for Bugonia.”
Even celebrities joined the buzz. Euphoria actor Angus Cloud’s brother posted a clip participating in the event, captioned: “When art demands sacrifice.”
Why It Works
The campaign might sound wild, but it perfectly mirrors the movie’s themes — transformation, identity, and what it means to let go of human vanity.
Searchlight’s head of marketing, Sarah Fineman, called it “an interactive extension of the film’s message.”
“In a world obsessed with filters and perfection,” she said, “we invited people to experience freedom through absurdity.”
Critics are already calling the campaign “the most original studio promotion of the year.”
Release Details
Bugonia will hit theaters in the U.S. and U.K. on November 15, 2025, with a global rollout the following week.
Searchlight confirmed that limited screenings for fans who participated in the “shaving event” will take place a week before the premiere.
Given the early critical acclaim and online hype, Bugonia is already being touted as a strong Oscar contender for Best Original Screenplay and Direction.

In true Lanthimos fashion, Bugonia blurs the line between art, absurdity, and human behavior — both on and off screen.
And if shaving your head gets you closer to that experience, well… it’s just another day in the surreal world of cinema’s strangest genius.
