Winter Olympics 2026, men’s ice hockey gold medal
Matt Boldy opened the scoring just six minutes in. He received the puck from Auston Matthews, maneuvered between two Canadian defensemen, and slid a backhand past goalie Jordan Binnington. Team USA was flying.
Canada, however, fought back. Cale Makar tied it at 1-1 late in the second period with a snap shot that found the far corner. From there, the game was locked. Neither side could break through in regulation. As a result, overtime would decide everything.
Jack Hughes needed just 1 minute and 41 seconds to end it. He took a pass from Zach Werenski — who was fed by goaltender Connor Hellebuyck — and slipped the puck through Binnington’s legs. The USA erupted.
The Hughes family night
It was a special night for the Hughes brothers. Earlier in the tournament, Quinn Hughes scored the overtime winner against Sweden in the quarterfinals. Now, his younger brother Jack delivered the biggest goal of all.
“It doesn’t matter about the goal,” Jack said afterward. “Just an unbelievable team win. We’re so proud to be American and to win for our country.” He finished the tournament with four goals and three assists across six games, leading the team in scoring.
Hellebuyck the wall
Behind the heroics up front, Connor Hellebuyck was simply magnificent. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner made 41 saves, including a crucial stop on Connor McDavid’s first-period breakaway. Furthermore, he denied Nathan MacKinnon at an open net in the third. Canada managed 42 shots. Only one found the net.
Jack Hughes put it simply: “Unbelievable game by Hellebuyck. He was our best player by a mile.” As a result, Hellebuyck was named Best Goalkeeper of the entire 2026 Winter Olympics.
Canada’s heartbreak
Sidney Crosby, Canada’s captain, did not dress for the final due to a lower body injury suffered in the quarterfinals. His absence was a heavy blow for the Canadians.
Nevertheless, Canada played a remarkable final. They outshot the USA heavily and pushed relentlessly for a second goal. Coach Jon Cooper, however, was gracious in defeat. “The real winner of this tournament was ice hockey,” he said. “That’s what we should all take from this.”
A historic night
This was Team USA’s third Olympic gold in men’s hockey and their first away from home soil. Mike Eruzione, who scored the winning goal in the 1980 Miracle on Ice, was in attendance to witness the moment.
“This is the most exciting U.S. hockey game I’ve been a part of,” he said before the game. The players delivered on every word.
