“The Monkey,” directed by Osgood Perkins, is a 2025 American comedy-horror film adapted from Stephen King’s 1980 short story. The film is set to be released in U.S. theaters on February 21, 2025.
The narrative centers on twin brothers, Hal and Bill Shelburn, portrayed by Theo James, who discover their father’s old toy monkey in the attic. This seemingly innocent artifact triggers a series of gruesome deaths whenever its key is wound. As the brothers attempt to rid themselves of the cursed toy, their lives spiral into chaos, leading them on a darkly comedic journey filled with horror and unexpected twists.

The ensemble cast includes Tatiana Maslany as Lois Shelburn, the twins’ mother; Christian Convery as the young Hal and Bill; Colin O’Brien as Petey, Hal’s son; and Elijah Wood as Ted Hammerman, the new husband of Hal’s ex-wife. Adam Scott appears as Captain Petey Shelburn, the absentee father whose mysterious past intertwines with the cursed monkey.
Critics have offered mixed reviews. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com awarded the film three out of four stars, praising Perkins’ direction and the film’s striking imagery. Conversely, Siddhant Adlakha from Inverse criticized the film’s tonal inconsistencies and lack of dramatic coherence, suggesting that its irony undermines any intended commentary on parenthood or death.
The film’s marketing campaign has generated significant buzz. The official trailer, released on January 16, 2025, garnered over 43 million views within 24 hours, setting a record for an independent horror film trailer. However, attempts to air the trailer on major television networks were rejected due to its “excessive violence.” In response, the studio released redacted email discussions with the networks, highlighting the controversy.

In an unconventional move, the studio has partnered with select churches to screen the film alongside traditional theaters, aiming to reach a broader audience and spark discussions about its themes. Additionally, a promotional giveaway in collaboration with Bloody Disgusting offers fans a chance to win an exclusive resin sculpture of the titular monkey toy, further fueling anticipation.
As “The Monkey” hits theaters, audiences can expect a blend of dark humor and horror, exploring themes of family, trauma, and the unforeseen consequences of unearthing the past. Whether it becomes a cult classic or a polarizing piece, the film undoubtedly adds a unique entry to the genre of horror comedies.
