Review Of Dramedy Starring Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien and Sam Li
Big Sun, Taipei’s biggest gangster, is plunged into a coma by a surprise attack from an unknown assassin. Before succumbing, he tells his son Charles, famous for his combat skills, to “protect the family”. Without missing a beat, Charles travels to Los Angeles to see his mother, who has been living a “normal” life for the past 15 years, and his brother Bruce, who knows nothing of the family’s illegal activities. Reunited, they will have to face ruthless gangsters and family problems.
The series premiered on January 4, 2024. It was created by Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk, best known for co-creating shows like Glee, American Horror Story, and Scream Queens with Ryan Murphy. This is Wu’s first creation after his work on the short film The Getaway.

The actors all play to perfection, especially Michelle Yeoh who, as usual, shines in her role as the mother. Justin Chien (Charles) and Sam Li (Bruce) are phenomenal as two very different sons: the brute who wants to escape his father’s influence and the shy one who is trying to find his place both in the family and in life. The relationships between the characters are complex and rich.

But the film doesn’t forget the fun and action. The dramatic elements are mixed with well-choreographed, exciting fight scenes and effective comedy.
All of this against a very specific cultural backdrop. The Brothers Sun is also a portrait of the Chinese-American community, blending tradition and modernity.

The Brothers Sun has it all. The plot keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, and there’s never a dull moment. But more than just action, we’re also treated to the enchanting story of a family that has to face challenges and the changing of times.
