On the other hand, Sombr talks about his style and music genre in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I make what I want to make, and it just comes out how it comes out,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There are people who call rock and there are people who call pop. I’ll accept whatever that is, but I won’t call it anything. It’s just Sombr for me.” In addition, many experts say he moves between indie rock, alternative pop with classic rock influences.
The young star climbed to fame thanks to his viral TikTok songs called Back to Friends and Undress. Due to this popularity gain he managed to reach Billboard Global 200’s top 20 and the Hot 100. Furthermore, Sombr became more known after winning the Best Alternative Video for Back to Friends at the MTV Music Video Awards 2025. Moreover, he was also nominated for MTV’s VMAs in two other categories including Best New Artist and Song of Summer.
Furthermore, he will be promoting his new album I Barely Know Her, which was published on August 22, 2025. This is his debut studio album and also has 10 tracks. The new LP’s style is not different from what Sombr usually does. It is a mix of pop and indie rock album that is very profound in its lyrics.
Pitchfork graded this new album with 5.6 points with a full review talking about Sombr’s latest project. “His debut full-length, I Barely Know Her, follows in the lineage of his viral influences. Call it “yearncore”: The emotions are big and the choruses are bigger, but the production is too washed-out to risk actual vulnerability. It’s music to sink into, an electronic dreamy mush that’s somehow equal parts Foster the People and Mazzy Star. In one corner, you have more refined groups like crushed and Night Tapes; in Sombr’s corner, you have poppier acts like actor Dylan Minnette’s project Wallows and NYC singer Del Water Gap, whose aching 2020 hit Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat is Sombr’s most immediate precursor.
