Mbappé and Bellingham shine, and Real Madrid extends La Liga lead by 5 points
The Santiago Bernabéu came alive on Sunday as Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Barcelona, breaking a year-and-a-half wait to win El Clásico at home. This win, fueled by standout performances from Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, boosted Madrid’s position at the top of La Liga, extending their lead to five points over their Catalan rivals after ten rounds of the 2025-26 season.
Drama unfolded early when a controversial second-minute penalty was initially awarded to Madrid after a challenge by Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal on Vinicius Jr. Yet after a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned as replays showed contact going the other way. This incident set the stage for a contentious and heated game, with chants of “Negreira” echoing in protest from the Bernabéu stands.
The first goal eventually came in the 22nd minute, with Mbappé capitalizing on a defense-splitting pass from Bellingham to fire a low finish past goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Frenchman, continuing his remarkable El Clásico scoring run, marked his fourth consecutive game with a goal.
Barcelona fought back just before halftime after an error from Real’s Arda Guler, allowing Fermin Lopez to finish from a Marcus Rashford cut-back. Despite this, Barcelona’s attack struggled to break down a disciplined Madrid defense which was tactically astute under Xabi Alonso’s management.
Bellingham’s influence was evident throughout, not only setting up the opener but also scoring a crucial goal himself in the 44th minute after a head pass from Eder Militao. His resurgence this season has been pivotal for Madrid, highlighting his return to form since overcoming a shoulder injury and surgery earlier this year.
After the break, VAR again played a role when a penalty was awarded upon review for a handball by Eric Garcia. Mbappé’s ensuing spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Szczesny, denying the chance to extend Madrid’s lead.
Barcelona’s frustrations mounted, culminating in a late red card shown to Pedri following a second yellow, sparking a confrontation between both teams and leading to the dismissal of Madrid’s substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin as well.
The home side controlled much of the game with a fluid midfield and tactical positioning that exploited Barcelona’s high defensive line, especially through the play of Mbappé, Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr. The visitors’ offensive efforts were notably stifled, with key players Pedri and Lamine Yamal failing to make any significant impact while receiving jeers from the crowd throughout the match.
This victory marks a significant psychological and points boost for Real Madrid as they avenge last season’s four consecutive Clásico defeats and take a firm grip on the La Liga title race. Meanwhile, Barcelona remain under pressure, grappling with injury woes, disjointed performances, and mounting doubts about their ability to defend their crown under caretaker coach Marcus Sorg.
As the teams prepare for the road ahead, Madrid and Alonso will look to maintain their momentum, while Barcelona faces an urgent need for transformation to halt their slide and reignite their season.
