Little Mix star Perrie Edwards is sharing her emotional journey with pregnancy loss, revealing that she has experienced multiple miscarriages both before and after giving birth to her son, Axel.

The 32-year-old singer appeared on the We Need to Talk podcast on Tuesday, Aug. 19, where she candidly discussed the heartbreak she and her fiancé, footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, have faced while trying to grow their family.
Perrie Edwards’ First Miscarriage
Edwards explained that her son Axel, now 3, is her “rainbow baby.” She revealed that her very first pregnancy ended in miscarriage very early on.
“When I first found out I was pregnant, I started bleeding and went to the hospital,” she shared. “They told me there was no baby. I thought that meant I was never pregnant, but my gynecologist later explained, ‘No, my darling, you’ve had a miscarriage.’”
Because the loss happened so early, Edwards said she didn’t feel fully traumatized at the time, though it left her cautious during her next pregnancy.
Pregnancy Complications While on Tour with Little Mix
After welcoming Axel, Edwards became pregnant again nearly a year later—while rehearsing for Little Mix’s final tour. She kept the news private, still wary from her first loss.
“Every night before a show, I kept bleeding,” Edwards revealed. “I thought, ‘This is it, I’ve lost the baby.’ But when I went to the doctor, they told me the baby was still alive, though there was a blood clot around the sac.”
Despite ongoing bleeding, her 12-week scan was reassuring. She even began showing while on vacation in Portugal. But things took a devastating turn at her 22-week scan.
The Devastating 24-Week Miscarriage
Edwards described the moment as “the worst day of my life.” During the scan, she noticed her doctor repeatedly checking the same area, and she immediately sensed something was wrong.
“I just remember sobbing. We basically lost the baby at 24 weeks,” Edwards said. “The first time it happened, I thought, ‘That’s sad.’ But when you’re carrying for that long, when you’ve planned the nursery and imagined their future, it’s absolutely heartbreaking.”
She admitted that she hasn’t spoken publicly about the trauma until now because it makes her too emotional, saying only her close friends and family knew about the loss.
Reflecting on Her Past Relationship with Zayn Malik
During the podcast, Edwards also reflected on her highly publicized relationship with former fiancé Zayn Malik, whom she dated from 2011 to 2015.
“He was my first love,” Edwards shared. “At the time, I thought everything we experienced was normal. Looking back, I realize how toxic some parts of it were, but I just didn’t know better then.”
The singer admitted she felt “embarrassed, weird, and mortified” in the aftermath of her breakup, explaining that she had never experienced heartbreak before—let alone with the entire world watching. “It was just… too much,” she recalled.
Though their engagement ended in heartbreak, Edwards said the relationship taught her valuable lessons that shaped who she is today.
An Unexpected Comeback
On the podcast, Perrie revealed that Zayn unexpectedly reached out to her following his high-profile split from Gigi Hadid in 2018. By then, she had already been in a relationship with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for about two years.

“I felt a bit uncomfortable about it,” she confessed. “I remember sweating and panicking, thinking, I’ve got to tell Alex that I’ve spoken to him.” But instead of reacting with jealousy, Alex handled the situation with complete composure.
“He was like, ‘Okay, well, I really appreciate you telling me. Thank you for letting me know. That’s fine—and hopefully, he doesn’t contact you again,’” Perrie shared, praising Alex’s calm and understanding response.
Edwards’ Saving Grace
Her saving grace during that difficult chapter was the unbreakable bond with her Little Mix bandmates. Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Jesy Nelson (who also became a mother recently) were her emotional lifeline.

Perrie remembered countless moments when the girls rallied around her, offering distractions, comfort, and support whenever the pain felt unbearable. “If it wasn’t for the girls, I would’ve really struggled,” she admitted.
