Get ready for another round.
Paramount Pictures and Legendary Entertainment have officially confirmed a new “Street Fighter” live-action film, reigniting one of the most iconic fighting franchises in pop culture.
The news dropped via a joint press release earlier this week, confirming that production will begin in early 2026, with Capcom directly involved in the creative process.
This marks the third major attempt to bring Street Fighter to the big screen, after the 1994 cult film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and the 2009 reboot The Legend of Chun-Li.

A Collaboration Between Giants
According to Variety, this new adaptation will be co-produced by Legendary Entertainment (Dune, Godzilla x Kong) and Paramount Pictures, which will handle worldwide distribution.
The deal was finalized in September 2025, following months of negotiations with Capcom, who will retain creative oversight to ensure authenticity for fans.
“This is not just another video game movie,” said producer Mary Parent (Legendary). “It’s a celebration of everything Street Fighter represents — skill, honor, and rivalry.”

The Creative Team
While no director has been officially confirmed, insiders suggest that Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane) is in advanced talks to helm the project.
Capcom’s film division will also appoint a fight choreography team led by Jonathan Eusebio, known for his work in John Wick and Extraction.
The script is being co-written by Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tasha Huo (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft).

Casting Rumors Begin
Although no casting announcements have been made, early reports indicate that Paramount is targeting a mix of established action stars and international newcomers to reflect the game’s global scope.
Among the names circulating in fan discussions:
- Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat) as Ryu
- Jessica Henwick (The Matrix Resurrections) as Chun-Li
- Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) as Ken Masters
- Dave Bautista (Dune) as Guile
“We want to honor the legacy but also give it a fresh identity,” an insider told The Hollywood Reporter.

Video Game Adaptations Are Booming
The Street Fighter reboot arrives amid a golden age for video game adaptations, with recent successes like:
- The Last of Us (HBO)
- Fallout (Prime Video)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s (Universal)
- Super Mario Bros. (Illumination)
Hollywood’s newfound respect for gaming IPs shows that studios are finally treating these stories with cinematic depth rather than gimmickry.

What Fans Can Expect
Unlike previous adaptations, the new Street Fighter film will avoid campy tone and exaggerated costumes, instead opting for a grounded martial-arts approach inspired by John Wick and Creed.
Capcom’s involvement ensures the inclusion of iconic arenas, special moves, and cultural representation faithful to the franchise’s spirit.
“The soul of Street Fighter lies in respect between rivals,” said Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono. “That’s what we want audiences to feel — not just the fight, but the philosophy.”

Release and Production Details
Filming is set to begin in March 2026 across locations in Bangkok, Vancouver, and Tokyo, with a tentative release window of summer 2027.
The project is expected to kick off a new shared universe for Capcom adaptations, potentially connecting with a Resident Evil reboot currently in early development at Legendary.

After years of failed adaptations, Street Fighter might finally get the cinematic respect it deserves.
With Legendary and Paramount behind the gloves, the project could blend authentic martial arts, emotional storytelling, and blockbuster scale — the perfect recipe for a 21st-century fighting saga.
