It’s officially over for Shaun White and Nina Dobrev. Less than a year after announcing their engagement, the beloved couple have broken things off.

The Olympic gold medalist, 39, proposed to The Vampire Diaries star, 36, in October 2024 with a stunning five-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring. But according to People, the pair recently decided to end their relationship on amicable terms.
A Mutual, Respectful Split
A source close to the couple shared that the breakup was made thoughtfully:
“The split was mutual and made with love and a deep respect for one another,” the insider explained, adding that White and Dobrev remain supportive of each other despite choosing different paths.
The pair were last spotted together on August 31, 2025, holding hands while running errands in Los Angeles. But just a week later, eagle-eyed fans noticed signs of a split when Dobrev attended the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her new movie, Eternity, without her engagement ring.
She also unpinned her engagement announcement from Instagram.
A Love Story Filled With Adventure
Throughout their five years together, Shaun White and Nina Dobrev became fan favorites for their sweet social media posts, travel adventures, and the way they supported each other’s careers.

In a 2024 interview, Dobrev revealed that they kept their relationship exciting with weekly date nights, taking turns to surprise one another with planned activities.
“One week I’ll plan it and he won’t have any idea what we’re doing, and then the next week he’ll plan for me,” Dobrev said. “It keeps things exciting and dedicates time for us to spend together.”
Despite White’s demanding schedule leading up to the Olympics and Dobrev’s busy filming commitments, the two always found ways to reconnect—often traveling long distances just to spend time together.
The Romantic Proposal That Stole Fans’ Hearts
Fans will remember that Shaun White’s proposal to Nina Dobrev in October 2024 was nothing short of a rom-com moment. After multiple failed attempts to pop the question, White finally pulled it off in New York City at The Golden Swan restaurant.
Going to extraordinary lengths, White even hid the engagement ring around their home—in places like a tool shed and sock drawer—so Dobrev wouldn’t discover it. He eventually lured her to the proposal location with a fake dinner invitation supposedly from Vogue editor Anna Wintour, which convinced Dobrev to get dressed up for the special night.
The actress admitted she was panicked about being late, believing Anna Wintour was waiting, only to walk into a candlelit room with White on one knee.

“I went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,” she recalled, describing the emotional moment of joyful disbelief.
Photos from the evening showed a tearful Dobrev saying yes, with White lifting her into his arms as they celebrated the milestone.
Nina Dobrev’s Dating History
Before her relationship with Shaun White, Nina Dobrev’s dating life often made headlines in Hollywood. She famously dated her The Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder from 2010 to 2013, and later had brief romances with stars like Derek Hough and Austin Stowell.
Dobrev was also linked to actor Glen Powell in 2017 after the two sparked dating rumors during summer getaways. Though none of these relationships lasted long-term, her bond with Shaun White was widely seen as one of her most serious and enduring romances, making news of their split all the more surprising for fans.
