The Swedish pole vault superstar clears 6.30m for a new all-time best, winning gold at the World Athletics Championships.
There are few certainties in track and field these days, but Mondo Duplantis delivering something extraordinary seems to be one of them. The Swedish pole vault phenom once again rose to the moment, soaring over 6.30 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo to break his own world record for the 14th time and grab his third straight outdoor world title.
The atmosphere inside Japan National Stadium was electric as Duplantis and Greeceâs Emmanouil Karalis dueled for gold. After both cleared 6.00 meters, Karalis couldnât get past 6.15, while Duplantis made it over 6.10 and then 6.15 meters almost effortlessly. With gold already in hand, Mondo moved the bar up to 6.30, a height no one had ever cleared, and converted on his third and final attempt, touching off a carnival of celebration with his competitors and an awestruck Tokyo crowd.
For Duplantis, now 25, records are almost routine. Since breaking Renaud Lavillenieâs world mark in 2020, heâs added 13 more, usually by a single centimeter. Of the 47 jumps over 6.10 meters in history, Duplantis owns 35. Heâs unbeaten in 97 out of 101 event finals since 2020 and now joins Sergey Bubka as the only menâs pole vaulter to clinch three straight world titles.
âItâs better than I could have imagined,â Duplantis told the packed stadium. âTo give you guys this world record is amazing. Iâm just so happy.â With another golden performance in the books, the only real question left for the sportâs leading showman: how much higher can he go?
