Yankees shock Red Sox, Dodgers sweep Reds, and Division Series matchups promise drama, historic parallels, and renewed rivalries across both leagues.
After a thrilling wild card round with decisive Game 3 upsets, Major League Baseball’s postseason is down to eight contenders, and the Division Series matchups are set to begin on Saturday, October 4. The Yankees dispatched the Red Sox 4-0 behind rookie Cam Schlittler’s dominant start, joining the Blue Jays, Mariners, and Tigers in a stacked American League bracket. In the National League, the Dodgers swept the Reds in two games, while the Cubs advanced against the Padres, setting up high-stakes battles with the Brewers and Phillies, respectively.
In the American League, the first-place Blue Jays take on the Yankees in a rematch brimming with history, while the surging Mariners face off with the Tigers, who defied recent struggles to outlast the Guardians. Both series feature deep lineups and pitching staffs with glaring similarities to past champions—from Toronto’s Guerrero/Springer core reminding fans of Pujols/Berkman, to Seattle’s power-packed lineup echoing the ’96 Yankees. Game 1s are set for Saturday in Toronto and Seattle, with Game 3s and potential Game 5s moving to New York and Detroit.
The National League offers its own intrigue, as the Brewers, led by Christian Yelich, seek their first pennant against the division-rival Cubs—a matchup reminiscent of the early-aughts Angels-Athletics rivalry. The Dodgers, stacked with All-Star bats and Shohei Ohtani, aim to conquer the Phillies, led by Kyle Schwarber’s home-run thunder and a rotation that, despite losing ace Zack Wheeler, still boasts playoff-tested depth.
All Division Series games are best-of-five and run through October 11, with broadcast coverage split among TBS, Fox (FS1), and ESPN. Series winners advance to the League Championship Series starting October 12–13, and the World Series is scheduled for October 24 to as late as November 1.
