Grab your pickaxe — Minecraft is coming back to the big screen.
After years of rumors and development delays, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Minecraft Movie 2 will hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
The sequel follows the 2025 live-action adaptation starring Jason Momoa, which blended the game’s signature blocky world with family adventure and humor. Now, the studio hopes to expand the Minecraft cinematic universe with a story “bigger, bolder, and even more creative.”

The Announcement
The news broke during Warner Bros. Discovery’s fall 2025 presentation, where the studio unveiled its upcoming slate of films. Minecraft Movie 2 was one of the most talked-about reveals, confirming that director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) will return, alongside producers Roy Lee and Mary Parent (Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong).
“We’re building a world that celebrates creativity, teamwork, and the limitless imagination that defines Minecraft,” said Hess in a statement.
The announcement comes as the original Minecraft Movie continues to perform well on streaming, maintaining strong numbers among younger audiences on Max and Netflix international territories.

What We Know So Far
While plot details are still under wraps, early reports suggest Minecraft 2 will introduce new biomes, creatures, and multiplayer-inspired adventures.
Fans are already speculating about new characters and environments — from desert temples to the Nether and End dimensions — that could finally bring the full scope of the game’s world to life.
Rumors also suggest that the sequel may feature animated sequences integrated with live-action, similar to The Lego Movie, to expand the storytelling possibilities.

The Cast
Jason Momoa is expected to reprise his role as the film’s main hero, though Warner Bros. has not confirmed additional cast members yet.
Online speculation points to possible new additions from the gaming and streaming world, with fans suggesting Jack Black, Daisy Ridley, or even Ryan Reynolds could join the project in voice or live-action roles.
“We want this universe to grow the way the game has — collaboratively,” said producer Roy Lee.

The Game That Changed Everything
Since its release in 2011, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies, becoming the best-selling video game in history.
Its open-ended creativity, mod culture, and crossover appeal made it a generational phenomenon — one that continues to inspire fan films, music, and YouTube empires.
The sequel aims to channel that same universal creativity on screen, connecting veteran players and new fans alike.
Fan Reactions
Social media exploded within hours of the announcement. On X (formerly Twitter), #MinecraftMovie2 trended worldwide, while TikTok filled up with memes, fan posters, and theories about possible cameos from streamers and YouTubers.
One viral comment read: “If Dream and TommyInnit don’t appear, we riot.”
The excitement mirrors the Barbenheimer-style hype Warner Bros. experienced earlier this year — especially since Minecraft 2 shares its 2027 release window with The Simpsons Movie 2.

With Minecraft Movie 2 officially on the horizon, Warner Bros. is mining nostalgia and creativity once again — but this time, the stakes (and blocks) are higher.
If the first film built the foundation, the sequel promises to construct an even grander cinematic world — one that celebrates imagination, collaboration, and the enduring magic of Minecraft.
