Suspension for missed drug tests sidelines former champion until March 2026, raising anticipation for comeback at presidential UFC event.
Conor McGregor has been handed an 18 month suspension by UFC authorities after missing three anti-doping tests in 2024, sidelining the former champion until March 20, 2026. The ban comes after the Irishman failed to provide his whereabouts on three separate occasion, June 13, September 19, and September 20, constituting a violation of UFC’s anti-doping policy.
Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD), the UFC’s enforcement agency, acknowledged McGregor’s full cooperation with their investigation and his acceptance of responsibility. These mitigating factors reduced his ban from the standard 24 months to 18 months. McGregor had been recovering from injury at the time and was not scheduled for a bout during the missed tests.
The suspension retroactively starts on September 20, 2024, and expires on March 20, 2026, making McGregor eligible to compete at the UFC’s much-publicized White House card, announced by President Donald Trump for June 14, 2026. While McGregor has expressed interest in fighting Michael Chandler at the White House event, UFC president Dana White clarified that no bouts have been confirmed yet.
McGregor’s absence from the octagon has lasted since July 2021, following a severe leg injury in a bout against Dustin Poirier. This suspension adds another chapter to the fighter’s tumultuous career, marked by a series of controversies inside and outside the cage. Notably, McGregor has faced recent civil and criminal proceedings, further complicating his public and professional image.
CSAD emphasized the importance of accurate whereabouts reporting and unannounced testing as central to UFC’s anti-doping program, stating that all fighters are held to the same standards regardless of status. The organization also stressed that special event ambitions, like the White House fight, do not exempt athletes from regulatory requirements.
Unless further infractions occur, McGregor is expected to resume his career in 2026, with fans and critics closely watching his next move and the outcome of the much anticipated White House UFC event.
