Champions League knockout phase, first leg — Benfica 0–1 Real Madrid
Real Madrid were composed and controlled from the opening minutes. They absorbed early Benfica pressure without panic. Thibaut Courtois made an important save to deny Fredrik Aursnes in the first half. The breakthrough came in the 50th minute. Vinicius Jr. curled a stunning strike into the top corner. It was the moment of quality that separated the two sides.
Madrid held 56% possession and registered 15 total shots. Benfica’s defense struggled to contain the Vinicius-Mbappé partnership. The Spanish side go into the second leg with a precious one-goal lead.
Tchouameni’s masterclass
One name stood above the rest on the night. Aurelien Tchouameni was simply magnificent at the Estádio da Luz. He was named UEFA’s Man of the Match — and it was fully deserved.
Benfica could barely attack through the middle of the pitch. As a result, Tchouameni was a decisive factor in neutralizing their threat. Moreover, he imposed himself physically in a way that he doesn’t always do. He won duels, broke up play, and drove forward with confidence. Finally, alongside Rudiger and Huijsen, he stood firm as Benfica desperately pushed for an equalizer late on.
After the match, Tchouameni said: “It’s very difficult to play here with this crowd and this team. We knew the first 15 minutes would be really tough, but little by little, we played a good match and were very united.” He added that Madrid have returned to their best level and can win many more matches if they keep playing as a team.
The incident that stopped the game
The night turned dark just one minute after Vinicius scored. Prestianni confronted him, covering his mouth with his jersey. Immediately, Vinicius reported the abuse to referee François Letexier, who activated FIFA’s anti-racism protocol and halted the match for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, Mbappé later confirmed that Prestianni called Vinicius “a monkey” five times. Despite the severity, no player was sent off. However, UEFA has since opened a disciplinary investigation — and Prestianni faces a minimum ban of 10 games if found guilty.
Benfica’s shameful response on X
Rather than condemning the incident, Benfica took a different path. The club posted footage on X with the comment that, “given the distance, the Real Madrid players could not have heard what they claim to have heard.” They reaffirmed their full support for Prestianni and accused others of running a defamation campaign against him.
The post drew widespread criticism across social media and from football figures worldwide.
Henry’s emotional reaction
Thierry Henry’s response on CBS Sports went viral around the world. The French legend spoke from the heart.
He said: “I’ve been in this situation; it’s horrible. And not being able to prove it — you’re going to say no, obviously. At times you feel lonely because it’s going to be your word against his word.”
Henry added: “And to still be in 2026 dealing with the same thing, it’s tiring.” He then challenged Prestianni directly: “Let’s see how big of a man Prestianni is. Tell us what you said.”
