Joe Jonas has finally weighed in (albeit subtly) on the internet’s latest pop-music controversy involving his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

Following the release of Swift’s new album The Life of a Showgirl, fans were quick to accuse the superstar of borrowing melodies from other famous tracks, including one by the Jonas Brothers.
The conversation began when listeners pointed out striking similarities between Swift’s title track, “The Life of a Showgirl” (featuring Sabrina Carpenter), and the Jonas Brothers’ 2019 hit Cool.
Many fans joked online that “Cool” might actually be “the best song on Taylor’s album,” given how closely the two choruses reportedly align.
Fans Compare Taylor Swift’s “Showgirl” to Jonas Brothers’ “Cool”
Within hours of the album’s debut earlier this month, Swifties and Jonas Brothers fans alike began dissecting the melodies. On TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), viral mash-ups of the two songs showcased how the first lines of each chorus seem almost identical—different lyrics, same tune.
“The Life of a Showgirl” wasn’t the only track to spark debate. Another song, “Wood,” drew comparisons to the Jackson 5 classic “I Want You Back.” Still, the supposed overlap with Cool hit especially close to home for pop culture watchers, given Taylor’s highly publicized dating history with Joe Jonas.
Joe Jonas Subtly Addresses the Rumors
Neither Taylor Swift nor the Jonas Brothers initially commented on the plagiarism speculation. However, in a new Esquire interview, Joe Jonas may have quietly addressed the issue while discussing his ex’s latest record.
Admitting that he’s “extremely online,” Joe said he sees almost everything that happens on social media, including music debates and fan drama. When asked directly if he had listened to Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl, Joe replied diplomatically: “I’ve heard some of it. I think she’s obviously the biggest artist out there, and I think it’s good.”
Then came the line fans can’t stop analyzing:
“Everybody’s got an opinion about it, but from what I’ve heard, there are some catchy melodies.”
Given the ongoing chatter about the supposed melodic overlap between “Showgirl” and Cool, many listeners believe Joe’s use of “catchy melodies” was a subtle, tongue-in-cheek reference to the situation.
A Look Back at Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift’s Relationship
Of course, Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift’s history adds another layer to the story. The pair famously dated briefly in 2008, before Swift revealed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that Joe broke up with her during a “25-second phone call.” Their breakup later inspired several of Swift’s songs, including “Forever & Always.”
Over the years, the two appeared to have made peace publicly, with Swift even joking about the split in later interviews. Still, whenever their names resurface in the same headline, fans can’t help but revisit the past.
The Internet Reacts
Social media exploded following Joe’s Esquire comments. Some fans praised him for being diplomatic, while others saw his “catchy melodies” remark as expertly shaded humor. “Joe’s response was classy but clever—he knows exactly what he’s doing,” one fan wrote on X.
As of now, Taylor Swift has not addressed the plagiarism comparisons or Joe’s remarks. Whether intentional or coincidental, the parallels between The Life of a Showgirl and Cool have kept both fanbases buzzing.
