The Release Of The French Film Starring Pierre Niney Is Set For June

After directing and writing the new The Three Musketeers saga in 2023, Alexandre de La Patellière and Martin Bourboulon are once again taking inspiration from the prose of French writer Alexandre Dumas in a new adaptation. This time around, it’s The Count of Monte-Cristo‘s turn, one of Dumas‘ most famous works. We’ll have to wait until June to see Pierre Niney (Yves Saint Laurent) as Edmond Dantès.

Marseille, 1814. Edmond Dantès, a young sailor with a promising future, becomes a victim of the jealousy of his companions, who accuse him of a crime he did not commit. He ends up imprisoned in the island fortress Château d’If. Fourteen years later, the arrival of a wealthy and mysterious Italian in Paris has the French nobility buzzing. But behind the name of the Count of Monte-Cristo lies a man in search of revenge from the three men who betrayed him.

Mixed Expectations

The impressive images shown in the teaser are divisive. The press are already calling Dantès “France‘s first superhero” and this film “a blockbuster à la française“. Some people seem impatient to discover this new adventure movie.

Pierre Niney, however, seems under pressure to deliver. His performance is already being compared to those of Jean Marais in 1954 and Gérard Depardieu, recently accused of rape and sexual harassment by 13 women, in 1998.
