Leave it to Sir Elton John to sport the most bizarre yet iconic fashion.

When you think of Elton John, you might picture dazzling sequined jumpsuits, oversized glasses, and unforgettable songs like Rocket Man and Tiny Dancer. But the music icon has now taken eccentricity to a whole new level: he’s literally turned his kneecaps into gold-plated jewelry.
The unexpected reveal comes in a new documentary, Elton John — Touched by Gold, released September 15 on YouTube by the World Gold Council. The film explores Elton’s lifelong connection to gold — both as a symbol of his artistic triumphs (including his rare EGOT status) and now, as part of his physical legacy.
Elton John’s Kneecap Necklace and Brooch
In the documentary, Elton explains how he came to possess two unusual keepsakes. After undergoing surgery to have both kneecaps removed, he requested to keep the bones.
“When I had my kneecaps removed, the left one first and then the right, I asked my surgeon if I could keep them, which he was rather startled about,” Elton recalls.
He then approached his longtime friend and luxury jeweler Theo Fennell, asking him to transform the bones into something extraordinary.
The right kneecap became a gold-plated necklace, with Fennell carefully baking and drying the bone to make it workable before encasing it in gold. Elton marveled at the result, calling it “amazing” and noting that the hole in the patella was not decorative — it was part of his actual bone.

The left kneecap, being smaller, was crafted into a brooch. While more difficult to design, Fennell ensured the piece retained its organic shape, emphasizing that only gold could properly mold around something so unique.

The Design Process: Ancient Artifact Meets Rock ‘n’ Roll
Fennell detailed the meticulous process of turning bone into wearable art. The kneecaps were baked until porous, painted with acetate, polished, and then adorned in gold.
Elton was delighted with the final look, comparing the necklace to something unearthed from antiquity. “It looks a bit like an old artifact from Egypt or something,” he said, while Fennell described the pieces as “talismanic.”
The necklace chain itself was designed from bone-like structures, further emphasizing the theme. On the back, an engraving in Latin reads: “I will no longer bow to any man,” a witty nod to the fact that without kneecaps, bending down isn’t exactly an option.
Elton John’s Legacy of Eccentric Style
The kneecap jewelry may sound shocking, but for Elton John, it’s simply another chapter in his history of boundary-pushing self-expression. Throughout his decades-long career, Elton has been known not just for his music but for his theatrical stage presence, flamboyant costumes, and bold accessories.
From feather boas to diamond-studded glasses, Elton has always blurred the lines between fashion, performance art, and music. His latest transformation — turning his own bones into jewelry — ensures that even in the most unusual ways, his legacy will endure.
“I honestly think these are timeless pieces that will last for centuries,” Elton said in the documentary.
Elton John’s Career Celebrated in Touched By Gold
Beyond the jewelry reveal, the documentary dives into Elton John’s extraordinary journey, celebrating his decades of success, his impact on pop culture, and the many times his life has been “touched by gold.”
With his status as one of the world’s best-selling artists, his EGOT achievements (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), and his ability to constantly reinvent himself, Elton John continues to prove why he is a true music legend.
And now, with his kneecaps immortalized in gold, he has quite literally left behind a piece of himself for history to remember.
