Dunk contest hits a new low
The dunk contest has a star problem. No marquee names signed up for the event this year. Fans tuned in hoping for excitement. They left mostly disappointed.
The four participants were Carter Bryant, Jaxson Hayes, Keshad Johnson, and Jase Richardson. All are young or fringe roster players. None are household names across the NBA.
A forgettable show
Bryant, a San Antonio Spurs rookie, did post one perfect score of 50. It was the only highlight worth talking about. His final dunk, however, failed to impress the judges badly. Heat forward Keshad Johnson won the contest with a score of 97.4. He has played just 37 career NBA games in two seasons. Most fans had never heard of him before Saturday night.Richardson, son of two-time dunk champion Jason Richardson, could not match his father’s legacy. Hayes provided little spark as well. The crowd reactions told the whole story.
The dunk contest has been in slow decline for years. Legends like Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, and Vince Carter made it unmissable. Today’s stars simply refuse to participate.
There is now a growing push to eliminate the event entirely. Critics argue it no longer serves its purpose as the weekend’s centerpiece. The format feels stale and the talent pool is thin.
Lillard steals the night
The real story of Saturday was Damian Lillard. He hasn’t played a single NBA game this season. A torn Achilles kept him off the court since last spring.
Yet Lillard showed up and won the 3-Point Contest for the third time. He edged Devin Booker in a thrilling final round. He now stands alongside Larry Bird and Craig Hodges as a three-time champion. That was the moment fans will remember from All-Star Saturday. Not the dunk contest.
The All-Star game gets a new life
Sunday’s main event brought genuine excitement with a fresh format. The USA vs. World round-robin tournament replaced the old East vs. West game. It worked beautifully.
Anthony Edwards dominated for Team Stars across three games. He finished with 32 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists total. He took home the Kobe Bryant Trophy as MVP.
Team Stripes, the younger American squad, won the final in commanding fashion. They beat Team Stars 47-21 in the championship game. The new format gave the All-Star Game real meaning again.
