Drive-Away Dolls depicts Jamie (Margaret Qualley), a carefree soul recovering from a breakup, and her reserved friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan). Seeking change, they take a spontaneous trip to Tallahassee. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when they encounter a group of incompetent criminals.
Ethan Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke, pitched the film to Allison Anders in the early 2000s. Initially titled “Drive-Away Dykes,” the film, inspired by 1970s exploitation romance, faced financing challenges. However, in 2022, Coen was set to direct the film, produced by Working Title Films. Coen‘s debut as a solo director, inspired by exploitation cinema, was influenced by the break from filmmaking. The plot, set in 1999, was rewritten and filming commenced in 2022. The production, initially titled “Drive-Away Dolls,” included a star-studded cast.

It does not want to be ambitious it wants to be a fun time
The film pays homage to pulp cinema and B-movies, rejecting modern trends and celebrating freedom. Set in 1999, the film denounces conservative politics while embracing love amidst chaos.
“Love is a ride to hell” is the motto that Jamie has painted on the hood of the car in which they travel. “Love can fuck you up” is the message Sukie has sent to her ex. But, ultimately, love is the key to the film. “It seemed right and natural for these characters to fall in love while all this chaos is swirling around them. It was the fundamental part of the movie, and everything else could be silly, violent, absurd or whatever.”
