Dakota Johnson and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin have officially called it quits after eight years together, according to insiders.

The couple, who first sparked romance rumors in 2017, got engaged years later but never made it down the aisle — a decision that ultimately cost them their relationship.
Dakota Johnson Wanted to Marry, But Chris Martin Wasn’t Ready
Sources close to the couple reveal that 35-year-old Dakota Johnson, daughter of Hollywood stars Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, was ready to take the next step. However, Martin, 48, continued to delay setting a wedding date.
An insider told DailyMail: “Their relationship has been over for a long time; they just haven’t been able to figure out how to make it official.” Another source explained to Page Six, “She was sick of him dragging his feet on setting a date for the wedding.”
Representatives for both Johnson and Martin have yet to comment publicly on the breakup.
Subtle Hints Before the Official News
Just days before news of the split broke, Chris Martin raised eyebrows with a cryptic shout-out to Johnson during Coldplay’s Las Vegas concert at Allegiant Stadium. Speaking to the sold-out crowd, the “Paradise” singer thanked fans and then referenced Johnson’s latest film:
“Be kind to yourself, be kind to each other. Don’t forget to see Materialists! We love you!”

While some fans speculated the shout-out indicated the pair were still together, others suggested it reflected Martin’s ongoing support for Johnson despite their breakup.
“You can break up with someone and still be supportive,” one fan commented online. “Look at him and Gwyneth.”
Martin and his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow famously coined the term “conscious uncoupling” when they ended their 10-year marriage in 2014. Their divorce was finalized in 2016, but they’ve remained amicable co-parents to their children, Apple, 21, and Moses, 19.
Dakota Johnson Remains Devoted to Martin’s Children
According to insiders, Johnson is heartbroken not only over the end of her relationship but also because of her deep bond with Martin’s children.
“Dakota is devastated that she isn’t going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them,” a source shared with DailyMail.

Despite the split, sources suggest that reconciliation is not off the table entirely. “Right now, being separated will do wonders if they were to have any type of future together,” the insider added.
From Sushi Dates to Engagement
Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson were first spotted together in October 2017 at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles. Just one month later, Johnson was seen attending a Coldplay concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina, further fueling romance rumors.
The couple kept a low profile during their early months, eventually making their first public appearance together at Stella McCartney’s Autumn 2018 Collection show in Los Angeles. In a September 2018 interview with Tatler, Johnson subtly confirmed the relationship, stating, “I’m not going to talk about it, but I am very happy.”
Johnson and Martin’s blended family dynamic with Gwyneth Paltrow and her new husband Brad Falchuk also made headlines. The four were spotted vacationing together in the Hamptons and even spent Thanksgiving as a “modern family.” Paltrow expressed her support for Johnson in a 2020 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, saying, “I just adore her.”
In a 2024 interview, Johnson spoke openly about her love for Martin’s children: “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.”
Previous Breakup Rumors
This isn’t the first time breakup rumors have surrounded the couple. In 2019, reports emerged that they had briefly split due to differing opinions on starting a family but reconciled shortly after. Trouble was first reported again in August 2024, though a representative later denied those claims at the time.
