Chris Evans returns to the MCU alongside Robert Downey Jr. to appear in the highly anticipated ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, the film that will kick off the next big MCU event orchestrated, once again, by the award-winning Russo brothers, who previously directed the diptych of ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ with great success at the box office and critics. The beloved interpreter of Captain America in the Infinity Saga, now replaced by Anthony Mackie after the events of the battle against Thanos and ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, returns to the house that catapulted him to fame but, like his partner, he does so with a new character and not as the mythical Steve Rogers.

According to several leaks, Chris Evans will not be playing Captain America this time, but Nomad, an alternate identity of his superhero that originally appeared in 1974 through the writing and pencils of Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema, respectively. Nomad has several identities in the comics, but we assume that the actor will play his “defector” version of Steve Rogers. The original Nomad was born as an alternate identity that Steve Rogers adopts after abandoning the suit and title of Captain America. Rogers, after discovering that a high-ranking government official is the leader of the Secret Empire, considers that he can no longer serve the United States and adopts a new dark blue and yellow uniform without any patriotic markings, acting as a superhero in the same way but without any flag tied to his person. Later, Edward Ferbel, Jack Monroe or Rikki Barnes adopted the figure of Nomad for other reasons.

It’s a logical identity shift, after all, considering that Anthony Mackie now occupies the mantle of Captain America and that Brave New World will likely feature a corrupt government led by Harrison Ford’s Ross. With this, Evans can organically and naturally evolve within Marvel by moving on to another character without essentially giving up Steve Rogers and his past as leader of the Avengers. In any case, it remains to be seen what his return will be like and what relationship it will have with the new Avengers and current characters of the MCU. Avengers: Doomsday premieres in theaters in 2026 with some big surprises.
