Elijah Blue Allman, the 48-year-old son of music legends Cher and Gregg Allman, has been hospitalized following a suspected drug overdose in Landers, California.

The incident occurred on Saturday, June 14, according to a statement released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded to a call about a man “acting erratically” at a private residence. Upon arrival, medical personnel were already on scene assessing Allman. Authorities later discovered drugs inside the home, confirming an ongoing investigation.
It was first reported by TMZ.
Cher’s Previous Conservatorship Request for Elijah Blue Allman
This incident follows mounting public concern about Elijah Blue Allman’s struggles with substance abuse and mental health. In December 2023, Cher filed a request for a conservatorship over her son, citing his inability to manage his financial affairs due to “severe mental health and substance abuse issues.”
According to the Los Angeles County Superior Court documents, Cher was concerned that trust fund distributions from Elijah’s late father, Gregg Allman, would be misused on drugs, putting Elijah’s life at risk.
“Elijah is entitled to regular distributions… but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, any funds distributed… will immediately be spent on drugs,” the legal filing stated.
Elijah opposed the petition, and in September 2024, Cher withdrew her request, though her legal team requested the case be dismissed without prejudice, leaving the door open for future legal action.
Divorce Drama and Past Allegations Against Cher
Elijah Blue Allman’s personal life has also been turbulent. His estranged wife, Marieangela King, filed for divorce in April 2024, citing irreconcilable differences after 11 years of marriage. King shared with People that, despite their separation, she holds deep respect for Elijah:
“We had a beautiful 13-year journey… Elijah will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Interestingly, Elijah had originally filed for divorce in November 2021, but withdrew the request in January 2024. He refiled shortly after a judge denied the dismissal due to unresolved financial issues.
Amid their legal battles, King accused Cher of orchestrating a forced removal of Elijah from a New York hotel on their wedding anniversary in November 2022. She claimed in court documents that four men, allegedly hired by Cher, took Elijah away without explanation. Cher later denied the kidnapping allegations, stating:
“I’m a mother… one way or another, it’s my job to help my children.”
Allman’s History with Drug Addiction
Elijah has previously spoken candidly about his long battle with drug addiction. In a 2014 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he admitted to experimenting with marijuana and ecstasy at age 11 before progressing to heroin and opiates.
“I did have some close calls… some moments of really feeling at the edge of mortality,” he shared.
He acknowledged the dangers of addiction, reflecting that despite trying to stay “a little bit safe,” the unpredictable nature of drug use can lead to life-threatening situations.
About His Father’s Drug Addiction
Gregg Allman, legendary frontman of the Allman Brothers Band, faced a long and public battle with drug addiction during his rise to fame. The Southern rock icon, who passed away in 2017, struggled with heroin use throughout much of his career, which ultimately took a toll on both his personal life and his band.

Following the massive success of the Allman Brothers Band’s 1973 album “Brothers and Sisters”, the group began to unravel. Internal conflict, substance abuse, and diverging solo careers strained relationships within the band.
In 1976, Gregg was arrested on federal drug charges, and further controversy followed when he testified against the band’s tour manager and close friend, John “Scooter” Herring — a decision that made him widely unpopular among his peers.
Gregg Allman’s heroin addiction also played a major role in the collapse of his high-profile marriage to Cher. The pair were married from 1975 to 1979, and their relationship faced immense pressure due to his drug problems.
In a November 2024 interview with USA TODAY, Cher reflected on the complicated relationship with her ex-husband:
“Oh, my God, I was so crazy about Gregory,” she said. “I loved him so much and he was so wonderful. He was this amazing man who happened to be a heroin addict.”
She added with a laugh: “I guess you can’t have everything.”
