Polish striker ends scoring drought with brilliant penalty and two headed goals as Barça cut Real Madrid, LaLiga leaders, lead to three points

After a month without a start, Robert Lewandowski returned to the Barcelona line-up with a bang, delivering a sensational hat-trick to dismantle Celta Vigo in a volatile and high-paced match at Balaídos. The 37-year-old striker’s first goal came from the penalty spot in the 9th minute after a handball foul was spotted by VAR, followed by two exquisite headed goals including a towering finish off a Marcus Rashford cross late in the game.

Barcelona were pushed hard in the first half by an energized Celta side. The hosts fought back with quick responses through goals from Sergio Carreira and Borja Iglesias, exposing the defensive frailties that have dogged the Catalan side all season. Despite those early problems, Barça’s intensity and tactical adjustments after halftime allowed them to control the game, suffocating Celta’s counter-attacks and exploiting weaknesses particularly on the wings.

Midfielder Frenkie de Jong was sent off in stoppage time, reflecting the tense nature of the contest. Nonetheless, Barcelona’s key players stepped up. Rashford contributed with key assists and a devastating cross to Lewandowski for the third goal, while Lamine Yamal sealed the victory with a confident finish. The win narrows the gap between Barça and La Liga leaders Real Madrid to three points, providing fresh momentum before the international break.

Coach Hansi Flick lauded Lewandowski’s influence and resilience, emphasizing the striker’s growth in confidence as a catalyst for the team’s recent improvement. Flick also noted the team’s progress in maintaining possession and adjusting their defensive line, though he acknowledged ongoing challenges that remain to be addressed.

Barcelona now look forward to the international break with optimism, eyeing the return of key injured players to bolster their squad as they prepare for critical upcoming fixtures, including a potential Camp Nou return for their next home game, a symbolic match ahead of the club’s 126th anniversary.
