Atlanta rapper 21 Savage was the musical guest on the February 24th episode of the comedy show Saturday Night Live. He performed three songs from his album american dream. The first one was “redrum”, and he followed with a medley of “should’ve wore a bonnet” with Brent Faiyaz and “prove it” with Summer Walker.
Released on January 21, 2024, american dream is 21 Savage’s third solo studio album, following 2017’s Issa Album and 2019’s I Am > I Was.
“redrum” is third on the album. Its name references Stanley Kubrick‘s film The Shining, which is based on the novel by Stephen King of the same name. It samples vocals from Brazilian songstress Elza Laranjeira‘s “Serenata do Adeus”. On SNL, two singers interpret those vocals and Mapy, an award-winning violinist, plays the violin part.
Under the blue lighting of the SNL stage, the rapper joins forces with RnB singer Brent Faiyaz. “should’ve wore a bonnet” is track number twelve and marks their first collaboration. A bonnet is a common protective hair accessory, which, according to Genius, symbolizes the importance of being prepared for unexpected break-ups in a relationship.
The light turns yellow and a melodious voice echoes in the background as 21 Savage raps the opening verses of “prove it”. Singer Summer Walker appears, performing her part of track number 11. This is the pair’s fourth official collaboration.
This episode of Saturday Night Live was hosted by stand-up comic Shane Gillis. This was his first time appearing on the show after being infamously dismissed 5 years ago. Gillis was announced as a new cast member in 2019, but he was fired five days later due to backlash over a 2018 podcast episode in which he used ethnic slurs. It was the 12th episode of Season 49 and 960th episode overall.
